You know that moment in The White Lotus when the rich guests realize they’re being charged triple for a massage, but still tip anyway because they feel weird complaining?

Okay hold on to that and because that’s basically what Uber is doing to all of us when we travel.

Oh, minus the ocean view and existential dread.

Let me explain….

Earlier this year Uber ever-so-quietly rolled out this *clearing throat* “feature” called Preferred Currency Pricing which defaults to charging you a fee when you travel abroad and keep the price setting in your home currency (because why wouldn’t you keep the price setting to YOUR home currency).

Here’s the kicker though, it’s on top of any foreign transaction fees your credit card might already be charging. Which means you're potentially getting double taxed. For what? Because Uber thinks you're too jet-lagged or blissed out on Aperol spritzes to notice.

This is like if you bought a croissant in Paris and the bakery said, “Ah, you’re American? That’ll be $6.05 instead of €5. And also… merci for not reading the fine print.”

Yeah, no.

So why are so many people falling into this trip and why is no one noticing? Well, it’s bc this particular setting is on by default.
